Hello I’m Rory
I am the creator of Rory’s Story Cubes. I believe that everyone is creative but creativity is a like a muscle, we need to flex it to keep it active. We live in an ever-changing world in which we all need to connect and innovate. This begins with creativity and imagination.
Because the brain thinks in pictures and strives to make connections between things, I invented Rory’s Story Cubes to help you exercise your imagination.
The journey to Rory’s Story Cubes
One idea…Nine cubes…Infinite possibilities
Sometimes we all need help to tap into our imagination and our creativity. My personal journey to Rory’s Story Cubes encapsulates this. It is a story of insights, occasional vision, much frustration and ‘Ah Ha!’ moments. The result has been the development of a simple creativity tool, comprising nine small, embossed dice, which enable people everywhere have to access stories, ideas, creativity and insight they never realised they possessed. So how did this come about?

My journey goes back to 2004. I was practising Advanced Civilisation, a creative problem solving process recommended for discovering new inventions and processes. I was ‘introduced’, in my mind’s eye, to a new creative problem solving technique, the MetaCube – the earliest version of Rory’s Story Cubes. Based on the Rubik’s Cube, with icons instead of colours, the MetaCube opened the door to storytelling as a way to boost creative thinking and imagination. But the practical limitations of the MetaCube, plus possible copyright infringements, forced a rethink. The answer was to open up the MetaCube into its component parts, and so, after many trials, tribulations and much dogged determination, the 9 six-sided cubes that are Rory’s Story Cubes eventually came into being.
Since their official release in 2007, people of all interests and backgrounds have found new ways to use Rory’s Story Cubes®. The best thing about it is that people are using it first and foremost for fun. It brings people together to share the magical creation of a story that didn’t exist before the roll.

Almost every day I hear stories of how Rory’s Story Cubes have inspired someone to start writing, drawing or talking, brought clarity to a challenge they faced, or simply made them laugh together.
